Pedaled out to TMP on Saturday night. Climbing up Hidden canyon on a pleasantly cool evening watching the light dwindle was outstanding. The moves weren’t quite happening but such is life sometimes.

The way down started off well, moving through the rock gardens, floating over everything, chasing the light. The first steep switchback gave me pause and I stepped off onto a rock that quickly gave way. Momentum had the best of me and things turned pear shaped in a hurry. Three pops in the knee on the way down and a flood of pain, bad news. After several minutes of pulling my head back together and I was limping out. Katie came to pick me up at the hotel.

The right knee is swollen like a grapefruit, full of fluid severely limiting movement. Saw a doc today, X-ray looks good, no broken bones but tomorrows MRI will hopefully tell the whole story, who knows?

Rode with Chuck and the Critter from Fenix. It was Chris’ birthday  last weekend and he decided to spend in Tucson. We pieced together a great ride from town, up A mountain, then down the the 36th st. entrance (new to the fenicians). Move around the main loop then up Golden gate. Rode clean up to the saddle then down the lower golden gate techness. Up the road an back in at Camino de Oeste for a stroll through the wildflowers to the stone house then back out on Mariott trail (thanks to whoever spent time pulling boulders out of the trail in the name of making it “easier” for those who ride from the hotel WTF???)

A stop at La Herradura on the way back for a post ride burrito and back home. Good to see you Chuck and Chris, come back soon!

Who is this guy?

Golden Gate Goodness

Cheers

Its going to be a good year for wildflowers! This is only the beginning, a quick pedal around TMP seeking out new color. The next few weeks are going to be amazing!

Aside from the flowers, it was an outstanding day, perfect temperature and some clouds moving around.

I exited at the 36th st trail entrance which I don’t ride nearly enough, that piece of trail has an amazing flow to it. Stupid Fun!

Brendan and Mary brought me a present on their trip out here for the race this weekend, one freshly powdercoated Trauco with new dropouts for shifty bits.

Lots of changes from its previous incarnation as a rigid singlespeed

Yup, thats the one!

So here goes. Changes include: Reba up front vs. Pace carbon, flat/riser bars vs. H-bars, Ergons and gears. Lots of variations so it was hard to pinpoint exactly what is going on. Monday, Brendan headed out to TMP for some hidden canyon action. The bike immediately felt at home in my hands. I had to do some minor tweaking to the handlebars and saddle but quickly got things sorted out. The switch from H-bars to risers was shocking initially but so far change is good. I’m going to switch back to the H-bars to pin down the difference but so far I think the flat bars may be sticking around for a while.

NERDS!

The switch to the Reba really brought the bike to life, raising the head tube up just so transforming the ride quality from slightly nervous to darn right blissful. The resultant rise in head tube caused the odd combo of upside down stem and riser bar which will soon switch to flat stem and flat bar. As for the ride quality, Hidden canyon is kind of a silly test ground for comparing bicycles but familiar nonetheless. I was wondering if I would notice the difference between the 26″ rear wheel of the song and the 29″ wheel of the trauco thinking the Song had some sort of magical “billy goat” qualities but could not pinpoint a detriment on the part of the big wheel. The session climb up to the saddle was a riot, both Brendan and I putting forth noteworthy efforts. Brendan stuck the first “S” turn switchback after a few attempts, I was half a step away from pinning the upper “S” and we both nailed the exit move switchback.

At the top we wandered over to the mine shaft where we found this crazy shiz?

Finally the decent back down the the Marriot was pure delight, big wheels kept rolling and smiles were from ear to ear. It was good to get out in the sunshine after running support and expo duties out at the 24HOP.

It is almost mid February, the sun is shining, the skies are blue and we are topping off around the mid 70’s, fancy that. My weekly routine has switched off from morning bike rides in favor of running with the dogs before my daily 8am class. Immediately after class I’ve been getting in to work on the thesis (update soon) and somehow school has been consuming me until sometime between 6 and 8pm. Saturday was irresistible and I got out to TMP with Sadcow. Pretty standard stuff, moving quick and jamming hard when someone decided to head up John Krein trail from the East side? Anythings worth trying once right? A very small percent of this trail from the East is anything but hike-a-bike, even going down this thing only tricks you into thinking you are in any way controlling your bike. Nonetheless, it was interesting and I don’t see myself going up this way again. We did find a great rock face/ledge that looks off expansively to the south and west though. I am also proud to say I cleaned the ride down the West side of the trail. The trails are in great shape from all the moisture we’ve had and should make for great conditions at the 24HOP next weekend.

Hiking, some rain, and some pedaling.

Emily seems to have brought some of Chicago here with here in the form of cool, damp, and rain. Fine by me as we don’t see it often and I have the great confidence that we will be back to our regularly scheduled programming soon enough. In the meantime, Emily and I have been doing some hiking. On Thursday we went up Finger Rock trail 3+ miles before we decided to turn it around. That trail is great for the legs with plenty’o’steep.

Friday was spent with a morning pedal on the road and some errands followed by studying for my one and only final exam that evening. It has been years since I’ve taken a final exam, especially in a gen ed. type course i.e. lecture hall, tons of students, alternating tests for adjacent seats, wow. Check that one off the list. Saturday morning was rainy, Emily and I went over to the Summit hut and stared at maps for a while scoping out places we want to explore. We’ve got to get into the Rincons in the near future. I’m usually pedaling a bicycle when outside so exploration in those mountains has been a bit limited due to all the wilderness. I’m really looking forward too some trail running and hiking, maybe some overnights.

Later in the day once the rain stopped and we started to see some blue to the sky, we headed out to scramble around in La Milagrosa Canyon. We were met with water running all over the place which got me a bit cautious. The first crossing was almost knee deep with a pretty good push to the flow. Next we came to the convergence of Milagrosa canyon and Agua Caliente canyon. Too my surprise, Milagrosa was dry and Agua Caliente was booming. Must take a look at some maps to figure that one out. Anyway, we scrambled around, among the rocks and got to the ‘pools’ which looked like they had been standing quite a while, unimpressed, and with dwindling daylight we scrambled over the ridge and descended down the scree slopes to Agua Caliente. The water kept us in the scree and brush and by the time we got back to the convergence just as it was becoming too dark to see. Huff it back to the car and pick up some beers.

Dinner was grilled red snapper, pasta w/sun dried tomato pesto and a roasted beet salad, all washed down with Dogfish Head 60min IPA.

Today I slept in and headed out for a ride in TMP. Trail and weather conditions were ideal, nice cool air and super tack velcro. Today was a freebee day in the washes as traction was a plenty. We did some rather nice exploring on some faint, seldom used singletrack then moved around the main loop backwards. Toss in a few tasty side trails on the way and back down the hill into town. On the way down we hit up the back side of A mountain where the peanut butter mud was significantly less than the previous ride.

good night!
